Revolut vs Wise for travel: which card to carry in 2026

We used both for a year across 14 countries. One wins on exchange rates and the other on everything that happens when something goes wrong.

Both cards kill the two biggest holiday money leaks: the bank's foreign transaction fee and the airport exchange desk. After a year with both in the wallet, here is how they actually differ.

Exchange rates

Wise shows the mid-market rate and a transparent fee on every conversion. Revolut gives the interbank rate on weekdays within your plan limit, with a markup at weekends. For everyday spending they are within a few cents of each other.

When things go wrong

A card eaten by an ATM in Lisbon, a double charge in Bangkok, a lost phone in Rome. Revolut's instant freeze and disposable virtual cards saved us twice. Wise support was slower but resolved the double charge in full.

Our setup

  1. Revolut as the daily card, topped up weekly.

  2. Wise as the backup, holding a small balance in the local currency.

  3. One traditional credit card for hotel deposits and car hire, never for ATMs.

Do I need both cards?

No, but having two independent cards is cheap insurance. If one is blocked you are not stuck.

Which is better for receiving money?

Wise. Local account details in several currencies make it easy to get paid like a local.
